Andres Torres, who was a key factor is yesterdays win, has managed to get injured already. Obviously this is disappointing news. I was impressed with Torres in Spring Training and really looking forward to watching him play this season. Hopefully he will have a quick recovery and return soon. In the meantime, Kirk "I dare you to try and spell or pronounce my name accurately" Nieuwenhuis, is being recalled from AAA Buffalo to join the team and likely play in Torres's spot.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis has been a top prospect for the organization for a while. He was dominant last year in AAA ball posting .298/.403/.505 with 6 HR and 5 stolen bases in 221 at-bats. These are numbers that should give any fan confidence he is ready for the bigs.
His ZiPS projection was OK showing .238/.304/.398 with 11 HR. Perfectly respectable numbers for a rookie to put up that I can honestly see him exceeding. Everything we know of Nieuwenhuis indicates he has the raw skill to succeed, now he just need the MLB experience. Welcome to show, Kirk.
