As you can see, Mike Pelfrey remains atrocious. There has developed something of a de rigeur, contrarian movement in the Mets blogosphere to defend Pelfrey but frankly, none of the numbers support it. As usual, his big honor was that he pitched a lot of innings. He had the highest ERA and WHIP on the team by a pretty big margin, gave up the most hits and was near the bottom for SO and BB. In his last start he struck out 5 guys in 4 innings, the Pelf defenders jumped on this as evidence that he had a great Spring but clearly they are blinded by their fanaticism. If anyone is willing to declare a player "back" based on 4 innings of Spring Training ball has no business making judgements about pitchers.
The real story of Spring is that Johan looked wonderful. He lead the team in ERA and looked generally healthy and ready to pitch at an MLB level. He didn't get many strike outs and led the team in walks, which is certainly an area for concern but overall I think everyone can agree that things are looking positive for Johan going into the season.
Dickey looked great as usual. I feel like a broken record promoting Dickey at this point. Just look at his numbers. It's going to be another great year.
Niese struggled a little but lead the team in SO and gave up the fewest walks, which is important and shows he has the raw skills to keep growing and continue to become an effective MLB pitcher. Gee also put together a nice body of work, I think most everyone was expecting him to come down a little bit after a strong freshman year but his Spring numbers make me think he might do OK this season.
Outside of Pelf, these numbers give me some hope that our staff has some real potential this year.
