Jose Reyes is not the Mets

Today the NY Daily ran an article about Jose Reyes and free agency that essentially said, if the Mets don't sign Reyes, they should admit they are in rebuilding mode and not contending for 2012. I don't think the Mets need to admit this, whatever the status of Reyes the Mets are obviously in rebuilding mode. It seems their is a feeling that if the Mets don't resign Reyes we are giving up, which in my opinion is a totally false claim. We don't have a second baseman, a reliable closer, much of a pitching staff and star players riddled with injuries and long periods of sub par play. I feel like people believe that Reyes is the key to keeping this team relevant and in contention, which simply isn't true. Let's think about some of Reyes player value numbers. According to fangraphs.com he has a WAR of 6.2, which means he is good for about 6.2 wins more than the average guy who will replace him. In a season where the Mets finished in 4th place, 25 wins behind the Phillies and 14 behind the Braves, Reyes 6.2 win contribution didn't make much of a dent.

As much as I like Reyes, he is the not the straw that stirs the drink and his place on the team will not make or break the coming seasons. The Mets are multiple players away from being a good team.
