How badly do the Mets really need a utility infielder?

The Mets are widely reported to be seeking a set up man, closer, two backup outfielders, a catcher and a utility infielder. Is it just me or are we forgetting something in here?

At this point I think the Mets should be in the market for a starting pitcher.

Our current rotation does not fill me with confidence. Johan has not pitched since 2010 and has not made 30 starts since 2008. At this point he is a complete wildcard. No matter happens he is coming back with a much slower fastball than ever before. He may be able to get by with his other pitches and he may even return to brilliance but we have to admit that we really don't know and he could come back largely ineffective and still injury prone.

After that we have Gee, Niese and Pelf (Dickey doesn't need to be addressed, I have full confidence in a full and productive season for him). Gee and Niese I have faith in for the most part. They are both young, both talented and both should be getting better. That being said they are going into the second and third years respectively and what they will do is still a question mark. Pelfrey is just bad, even in 2010 when he was "good" he still kind of sucked and had a terrible second half. I am tired of hearing that Pelfrey's value is that he can eat up a lot of innings. Their has to be a point of diminishing returns when even though he pitches a lot of innings when they are all terrible, it stops being worthwhile.

In all likelihood one of these guys could be miss a lot of 2012 games and even if they all stay healthy Pelfrey should taken out of the rotation. The Mets should be pursuing a young, upper level starting pitcher. Someone who would make an immediate impact on next years team but is also young enough to make an impact in 2-3 years when the team is competitive again. Someone fans can get excited about who claim they won't watch the team anymore because Reyes is gone.

Paul Maholm and Gio Gonzalez come to mind as mid 20's guys with good stuff. But if the Mets really want to shake it up and spend some money, Yu Darvish would be my number one pick. He is only 25, has great stuff and would be a potentially exciting storyline for an otherwise boring 2012 Mets season. I know it's unrealistic they will spend the money to get him (much less even spend the money for a guy like Maholm) but just look at his career stats, they are like sabr porn.

And he is only 25! Make the move Sandy. It will make the team exciting now and he will be good for years to come, it will cost a pretty penny but nowhere near the amount other teams are spending on big time free agents and certainly less than we are saving with Reyes gone. Yu Darvish could be the future of the Mets but alas probably won't be.
