Considering Varitek for what? Certainly not to play catcher because he isn't any good at that anymore. Maybe they are interested in Varitek in jest, like a pretty girl who invites a nerd to a party then she laughs at him when he shows up. Maybe the plan is for Varitek to arrive at Citi Field with his bat and mitt only to be mocked by the Wilpons for thinking they would really want him. Last year Varitek played in 68 games and batted .221. Baseball-reference.com gave him a WAR of 0.0, which basically makes him the replacement, the stat could actually be WAV (Wins above Varitek). In all seriousness, Varitek was a great player but he is 39 and totally incapable of contributing to the Mets in any way. I assume they are not considering him seriously but even a little consideration is too much for me.
